Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the MBTI personality test

What is the MBTI personality test?

The MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is a personality assessment framework developed from Carl Jung's 1921 theory of psychological types. It analyzes personality through four core dimensions: Energy Direction (Extraversion E/Introversion I) determines how you recharge; Information Gathering (Sensing S/Intuition N) reflects how you perceive and process information; Decision Making (Thinking T/Feeling F) shows what drives your choices; Lifestyle Orientation (Judging J/Perceiving P) reveals how you interact with the external world. These four dimensions combine to form 16 personality types, each with unique cognitive patterns and behavioral tendencies. MBTI is widely used for self-discovery, career planning, team building, and improving interpersonal relationships.

What are the 16 personality types?

The 16 MBTI personality types fall into four groups: Analysts (INTJ Architect, INTP Logician, ENTJ Commander, ENTP Debater) excel at strategic thinking and rational analysis; Diplomats (INFJ Advocate, INFP Mediator, ENFJ Protagonist, ENFP Campaigner) possess strong empathy and idealism; Sentinels (ISTJ Inspector, ISFJ Defender, ESTJ Executive, ESFJ Consul) value responsibility and tradition; Explorers (ISTP Virtuoso, ISFP Adventurer, ESTP Entrepreneur, ESFP Entertainer) are flexible, practical, and live in the moment. Each type has unique value — there is no better or worse personality type.

How accurate is this free MBTI test?

This test is based on the Open Extended Jungian Type Scales (OEJTS), a scientifically validated instrument developed with over 25,000 participants. OEJTS was created by Open Psychometrics using classical psychometric methods to ensure question reliability and validity. That said, personality tests are self-assessment tools — results can be influenced by your current mood and self-awareness accuracy. We recommend treating your results as a starting point for self-exploration rather than a definitive label. If you get different results across multiple tests, focus on the traits that consistently appear.

Is my data private and secure?

OpenMBTI is an open-source project with a strict privacy commitment. Our measures include: no collection of personally identifiable information (name, email, phone); no tracking cookies; no IP address or browser fingerprint logging; no account registration required. We only store anonymous test responses for statistical analysis to improve test quality. All code is open-source on GitHub, allowing anyone to audit our data handling practices.

How long does the personality test take?

The test contains 32 questions and most people complete it in 5-10 minutes. We recommend answering in a quiet environment, going with your first instinct without overthinking each question. Base your answers on your true preferences, not how you think you "should" behave. This is not an ability test — there are no right or wrong answers. Each response reflects different personality traits, and all traits have unique value.

Can my MBTI type change over time?

According to Jungian theory, core personality preferences remain relatively stable after adulthood, though this doesn't mean people are unchanging. As you age and gain experience, you naturally develop more balanced abilities and can flexibly use non-preferred functions when needed. For example, an introvert may develop strong social skills for work, but their core preference (recharging through solitude) typically remains unchanged. If your test results vary between sessions, it may be because some dimension preferences aren't strongly pronounced, or your state of mind differed when answering.

What's the difference between OEJTS and the official MBTI test?

OEJTS (Open Extended Jungian Type Scales) is an open-source alternative to the official MBTI test. Both are based on Jung's psychological type theory and measure the same four dimensions. The key differences: the official MBTI is copyrighted by the Myers-Briggs Company, requires payment, and is typically administered by certified practitioners; OEJTS is completely free and open-source, available to anyone for use and research. OEJTS has been validated through large-scale data collection and demonstrates solid psychometric properties. For self-exploration and initial understanding of personality types, OEJTS is a reliable choice.

How should I interpret and use my test results?

Test results should serve as a tool for self-exploration, not a limiting label. Here's how to use your results effectively: First, read your type description and note which parts resonate with you; second, understand your strengths and potential blind spots to aid personal growth; third, learning about different types can improve interpersonal communication. Important caveats: don't use your type as an excuse for behavior (e.g., "I'm an INTP so I can't do social situations"); avoid stereotyping others based on their type; remember that significant individual variation exists within each type. Personality type is one dimension of self-understanding, not the whole picture.
